Do you have a big space where a tooth once was, or you’re looking into alternatives to replace a failing tooth? If so, there are a few different options to fill the gaps of missing teeth: removable partial dentures, fixed bridges (which attach to the teeth on either side of the gap), or dental implants.
If your bone structure is strong, dental implants are typically the best option to fill a space between your teeth. People who have osteoporosis or weak bone tissue in the jaw would likely be best served with a partial denture or a bridge.
Let’s talk about some of the main reasons why you should consider having a dental implant to fill the gap between your teeth, and where you can go in St. Paul and the Twin Cities for outstanding dental care for the whole family.
What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
A dental implant provides the following features:
- Natural-looking: Dental implants – and in particular, the crown which is fastened atop the implant – are designed to match the size, shape, and color of your other teeth.
- Restores function: Implants allow you to eat, speak, and smile normally and confidently.
- Prevents bone loss: Because a dental implant is surgically inserted (implanted) into your jawbone, it supports your bone and facial structures.
- Long-lasting: Implants are made from a special bio-grade material that is durable and strong.
- Fills gaps: Because the implant is in place of your original tooth, it looks perfect and keeps the other teeth from naturally shifting toward what was the open gap.
- Doesn’t require altering adjacent teeth: If you have a bridge, the teeth on either side of the gap will first need to be prepared in order for the bridge to attach properly. In contrast, a dental implant is a standalone prosthetic tooth; even if you have multiple gaps that need implants, each missing tooth will be replaced with an individual implant and a crown on each.
- Unable to get a cavity: Although you will still need to care for it like a regular tooth to keep the adjacent bone and gums healthy, a dental implant cannot develop cavities.
- Easy to care for: A dental implant is treated just like the rest of your teeth when brushing, flossing, and having routine professional dental cleanings.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Dental Implant?
To find out whether dental implants would be a good option for you, first, you would have to visit an oral surgeon. They will assess the health of your gums and bone structure, make sure you have enough of it to properly hold an implant, and determine whether the tissue is healthy enough to have an implant placed into your jaw. Your oral surgeon may recommend a bone graft to create a more solid base for the implant.
How Long Does the Process Take?
At the first appointment, your dentist will take a scan of your mouth or take a small impression (depending on the implant type). This will be sent to a lab to create the crown out of a strong, durable material that will match the rest of your teeth.
After about 3 weeks, you will go back to have the dentist place the abutment and final crown to complete your tooth implant. When you leave the dentist’s office, what was once a space will now be a fully functional tooth for chewing and talking – while also being cosmetically appealing and completing your smile!
If you are getting a tooth extracted and then replaced with a dental implant, the oral surgeon may be able to remove the tooth and place the implant immediately. However, if a bone graft is necessary, it can take a few months for the bone to heal before the implant can actually be placed. Once the implant is placed in the bone, it usually takes about 3 months for the jawbone to fully grow around the implant to keep it stable in the jaw. After the oral surgeon confirms that the implant is secure, then the prosthetic tooth (the crown) is attached on top of the implant.
