Elite Dental Team
There is one thing that school alone can’t give you, and that’s years of actual hands-on experience in the dental field. So, while Dr. Marion went to 8 years of post-high school education: 4 years of College& 4 years of Dental School, that only prepared him for dentistry. With Dr. Marion being a 3rd generation dentist, he was immersed in dentistry from birth! Dr. Marion’s Uncle, Father, and brother were dentists too. His compassion for others, sharing knowledge, and his drive to do and learn the best in dentistry is in his blood. So much so, that his daughter has continued the tradition, graduated dental school, completed a 3-year Orthodontic Residence and is now an Orthodontist and the family’s 4th generation dentist.

In addition, Dr. Marion’s clinical skills have been honed further by the hundreds of hours of continuing education that was required to receive his F.A.G.D designation. In order to be awarded by the Academy of General Dentistry a Fellowship, each dentist is required to attend hands-on clinical workshops covering the latest procedures and learning of the newest materials available to dentists. The final requirement is to pass a rigorous examination. Dr. Marion has accomplished these requirements and is one of only 5% of dentists in the United States to receive the F.A.G.D. designation.
Dr. Mark Marion has been selected yet again in 2023 as a Top Pittsburgh Dentist by other dentists and specialists. He has been selected for this prestigious award and has appeared in Pittsburgh Magazine every year since 2011, and for good reason. Dr. Marion Credits Awards to Supporting Team
RDHs:The team at Marion Smile Center currently consists of four (4) Registered Dental Hygienists (RDH). The RDHs are experts in overall tooth and gum health. They are trained to perform thorough professional cleanings and educate patients on proper home care. Our hygienists specialize in detecting gum disease in its early stages thereof. They do so by detecting the type, amount, and motility of the bacteria in your mouth using a microscope to analyze a slide study of a specimen taken from your gum pockets, along with taking measurements of your gums at least yearly.
If you like almost 50% of all Americans over age 30 have gum disease (periodontal disease) or are in the early stages, Dr. Marion will recommend that you come back for either 2 or 3 additional cleanings (gum therapy) to help get your mouth back to optimal health. During these additional cleanings, one of our hygienists will remove the calculus below the gumline and flush chemotherapeutic agents into the pockets of your gums. This will destroy the destructive bacteria which is infecting your gums and causing the gum recession, reduce or eliminate bad breath, and prevent possible tooth loss.
As one of our longtime hygienists, Katie, says, “YOU (the patient) are the captain of the ship. It is my job as a licensed dental hygienist to inform you of what I see and give you my clinical expertise, provide you with education, and give you options for treatment. You can then choose to do what you want with the information.”
EFDAs: Dr. Marion also has four (4) Expanded Functions Dental Assistants (EFDA) that assist him with clinical procedures, placing fillings after the Doctor removes cavities and shaping temporary crowns. EFDAs also have the licensing to assist hygienists by polishing teeth after a cleaning, applying fluoride varnish to help strengthen teeth against cavities, and even applying dental sealants to help protect teeth. They are experts in sterilizinginstruments and infection control, taking x-rays, digitally scanning impressions, and helping to make sure patients have an overall comfortable and positive experience.
Business Assistants:When you walk in the door at Marion Smile Center, you’ll be greeted by our friendly Business Assistants and Insurance Specialists. They will gather your information, help answer any questions you may have about your insurance,provide different payment options, as well as schedule your family’s next appointments.
The entire team completes monthlytrainings, attends seminars, and continuing education every year to provide top-notch patient care.
