Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening, a popular cosmetic dental procedure, is designed to reverse the natural aging process and staining that yellows teeth. This process brightens and whitens teeth without removing any of the tooth’s surfaces. Over time, various factors such as staining foods and beverages (like spaghetti sauce, coffee, tea, and red wine), smoking, age, dental trauma, tartar build-up, and certain medications can cause tooth discoloration. Teeth whitening is an easy way to lighten and brighten the existing shade of your teeth that will have you smiling with confidence!
At Marion Smile Center, we offer a variety of professional teeth whitening methods to help you achieve your desired brighter smile. Prior to our recommendation of which whitening procedure would be most effective for you, our team will take before photos of your smile and get a starting shade of your teeth. The different whitening services we offer include:
- In-Office Teeth Whitening: same-day results!
- Custom-Fit Whitening Trays: gel applied in custom trays at home
- Opalescence-Go Whitening trays: prefilled and disposable at home
- Internal Whitening: discolored single tooth after root canal
- Microabrasion: removes white spots/decalcification
Option 1: In-Office Whitening
Our In-Office Teeth Whitening is designed to brighten and revitalize the natural shade of your teeth with the quickest results. This method utilizes the highest concentration of professional whitening agents to achieve effective and rapid results seen directly after your two (2) hour whitening session. This whitening solution is chemically activated, meaning no hot, uncomfortable, bright lights are needed to whiten your teeth.
Professionally cleaned, healthy teeth for optimal results and comfort: Before commencing treatment, one of our dental professionals will conduct an initial consultation to assess your oral health, the extent of discoloration, and your desired results. This step ensures that our in-office professional teeth whitening is suitable for you and identifies any prerequisite treatments required for your desired results and comfort, this can include tartar removal or removing cavities.
Upon arrival: Our team will take impressions for Custom-Fit Whitening Trays that you can use at home to help maintain your whiter smile for years to come.
Professional Grade Whitening: To protect the cheeks and gums from the whitening solution, we use a rubber dam and apply a special protective gel that hardens to create a barrier on the gums. A professional whitening gel, containing 40% hydrogen peroxide (with potassium nitrate and fluoride for patient comfort), is meticulously applied to your teeth surface.
Same-Day Results: The concentration of our whitening gel is significantly higher than over-the-counter products, yielding superior results with our expert application. The whitening gel is applied to the teeth by one of our dental hygienists and monitored throughout the process. Even after your visit with us, your teeth will continue to whiten for the next 48 hours. Please plan on not to consume anything that would stain a white t-shirt during that time for best results (like red wine, coffee, berries, red sauce, etc).
Bring music, podcast, or audiobook: Keep in mind, you will be relaxing in our comfortable chair for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Feel free to bring music or have a podcast to listen to. We have blankets, pillows, iPads, and noise-canceling headphones available for you to use as well. Please let our team know if there is anything we can do for you to help you feel more comfortable during your visit.
A few days after your initial In-Office Whitening session, you will visit us to try on your new custom-made whitening trays. During that visit, one of our clinical team members will give you step-by-step directions for the use of whitening trays and gel at home, so you can maintain your new radiant smile.
Option 2: Custom-Fit Whitening Trays
Achieve a Brighter Smile from the Comfort of Home
If you’re looking to whiten your smile in the convenience of your own home, Marion Smile Center has the perfect solution: Custom-Fit At-Home Whitening Trays. We understand that your smile is unique, and that’s why we offer custom-fit upper and lower trays tailored precisely to your teeth and gums. Unlike traditional whitening strips or generic over-the-counter trays, our custom-fit solution is designed for optimal effectiveness.
Why Choose Custom-Fit At-Home Whitening Trays from Marion Smile Center?
Customized for You: Our team begins the process by taking precise impressions of your mouth, ensuring your trays fit snugly and comfortably. This personalized approach guarantees even and thorough coverage of your teeth, along with unmatched comfort during wear.
One notable advantage of our custom-fit trays is their ability to whiten all your natural teeth, getting the solution in between the tight grooves and contacts. In contrast, standard whitening strips only cover parts of your teeth, leaving uneven results.
High-Powered Whitening: We use the highest concentration of the most comfortable and safest at-home whitening gel available – a professional-grade carbamide peroxide gel. This potent whitening agent is exclusively accessible through dental offices, making our solution more effective than generic alternatives.
Convenience: Using our custom-fit trays is effortless. Simply wear them as directed (typically 30 minutes each day), allowing the peroxide gel to perform its magic. As the gel soaks into the tooth, hydroxyl radicals penetrate the tooth's surface and whiten the interior of stained teeth. Only by whitening the teeth from the inside out, will the results be longer lasting.
Results You Can Expect: While individual results may vary, many of our patients report noticeable improvements in their smile’s brightness in as little as 3-5 sessions. We typically recommend the trays to be worn for 10-12 sessions within the 1st month, or when your teeth have reached their whitest potential. After that, just pop the trays in a day or two before a special event or whenever they need a little brightening.

Option 3: Opalescence-Go Whitening Trays

These trays are pre-filled with a whitening solution. They are disposable, offering a hassle-free and efficient way to brighten your smile.
Why choose Opalescence-Go Whitening Trays?
Ready-to-Use Pre-Filled Trays: One box contains 10 days' worth of whitening, 10 upper trays, and 10 lower trays. Our On-the-Go Whitening Trays are designed for instant use right out of the package. No need for syringes or messy applications – simply pop them in, and let the whitening process begin.
Effective Whitening Solution: These trays are powered by a 15% hydrogen peroxide whitening solution (with potassium nitrate and fluoride for patient comfort) with only 15-20 minute wear time, providing a convenient and reliable method to maintain your dazzling smile.
Great for Teens and Patients Mid-Treatment: Go Whitening Trays are a fantastic choice for teens with mouths that are still changing and growing and aren’t quite ready to commit to Custom-Fit Whitening Trays, but want noticeably brighter, whiter teeth for Prom, Homecoming, or just want to feel more confident in their smile. We also recommend them routinely for our patients who want a whiter smile as they're undergoing longer, more extensive treatment, such as clear aligners, crowns, veneers, implants, or partial dentures.
Whitening with Braces: Yep, you heard that right! These pre-filled trays will fit around your braces and will still effectively whiten your teeth. The special gel used in these trays does not have to be touching every tooth surface for it to whiten, it penetrates your tooth and works from the inside to distribute itself out to all surfaces.
How do you use Opalescence-Go Whitening Trays?
Grab and Go: Anyone can purchase these trays at our office, ensuring you have a teeth whitening solution on hand whenever you need it. It’s your secret weapon for a brighter smile, available anytime, anywhere, and also great for gifts!
Easy Application: Brush, floss, and place the pre-filled tray over your teeth and let it work its magic for 15-20 minutes. It’s that simple and convenient!

Option 4: Internal Whitening
Brighten and Whiten Discolored Teeth
Do you have a single tooth that had a previous injury or root canal that has since discolored? You may be a good candidate for Internal Whitening. Dr. Mark Marion can evaluate the tooth to see if a few internal whitening sessions can lighten the darkened tooth to make it more consistent in color with the rest of your teeth. This maintains the integrity of the front of the tooth and does not require a crown or veneer.
Perfect for Injured Teeth, Root Canals, and More: Our internal whitening solution can brighten and whiten your affected tooth that has previously had injuries, trauma, or root canals.
Whitens Teeth Without Damage: Our internal whitening solution is comprised of a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel. This gel works to break down molecules causing discoloration inside the tooth, whitening the tooth as a result. This is not only an effective solution but is gentle enough on the tooth to avoid causing further damage.
Visible Results After Treatment: Because of the high concentration of hydrogen peroxide gel in our whitening solution, patients are able to see a noticeable difference in the shade of their affected tooth.
What to Expect from Internal Tooth Whitening?
Evaluation: Before your internal tooth whitening procedure begins, Dr. Marion will assess and evaluate your affected tooth to determine the cause of its discoloration. Because discoloration can be caused by a wide range of problems, it is important for Dr. Marion to get an accurate idea of how to effectively treat your tooth’s specific condition. In the event discoloration is caused by a buildup of bacteria, a root canal may be necessary prior to internal whitening.
Procedure: During your internal tooth whitening treatment, a small access hole will be made on the backside of the affected tooth. Through this opening, our high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel solution will be placed inside of the affected tooth. The opening is then sealed, allowing patients to return to their regular routines.
Results: Patients can expect to start seeing the results of their internal whitening treatment within just days of their initial procedure. It is important to note that a series of internal whitening treatments may be needed to achieve ultimate results. Dr. Marion will evaluate the shade of your tooth in comparison to adjacent teeth in your follow-up appointments and adjust your course of treatment accordingly.
Unlike other cosmetic solutions that simply mask the shade of the tooth on the surface, internal whitening provides patients with a long-term solution that whitens the discoloration at its source – from the inside of the damaged tooth. We encourage you to talk to Dr. Marion about internal teeth whitening and if it's right for you at your next appointment.
Option 5: Microabrasion
Remove White Spots and Brown Discoloration on Your Teeth
Tooth discoloration can be frustrating for everybody. If you are struggling with white spots on your teeth, look no further than microabrasion. Dr. Marion and his dedicated team are proud to use the Opalescence® Opalustre™ solution to provide patients with visible results after treatment. Now, patients can remove white spots and brown discoloration on their teeth and improve their smile with an easy, safe, and effective treatment.
Removes White Spots and Stubborn Brown Pigmentation: The microabrasion treatment using the Opalustre™ slurry uses gentle abrasive components and chemical methods to remove white spots and brown discoloration safely and effectively on the teeth for more even-colored teeth.
Minimally Invasive Treatment: Microabrasion is a minimally invasive technique that only affects the surface of the tooth, allowing patients to receive their treatment and go about the rest of their daily routines without interruption.
What should you expect from Microabrasion Treatment?
Examination: Prior to your treatment, Dr. Marion will assess your teeth and determine the severity of your white deposits or brown discoloration. After a thorough examination of your teeth, he will be able to provide you with a tailored treatment plan using our effective Opalustre™ solution to provide you with optimal results.
Procedures: The Opalustre™ treatment is minimally invasive and comfortable for our patients. Our highly trained hygienists work to gently remove white spots and brown discoloration from the surface of the affected teeth. This is done with the Opalustre™ hydrochloric acid slurry solution, which removes superficial imperfections, and carbide macroparticles, which provide a gentle abrasion. Oftentimes, Dr. Marion will recommend that a patient whiten their teeth to achieve the best results.
Results: Patients who choose the microabrasion technique have more even-colored teeth for years to come. Patients are able to see visible results of the Opalustre™ solution after treatment. It is important to note, however, that a series of treatments may be necessary to provide you with optimal results.
FAQs About Whitening
The food and drinks we consume are a major contributor to tooth discoloration – as are smoking and the aging process itself. Beverages, such as coffee, tea, wine, and fruit juice, are all particularly notorious for staining teeth. It certainly doesn’t help that our teeth naturally become darker with age, as enamel wears away, exposing the yellow-gray dentin layer underneath.
For best results, surface stains on the outside of your teeth should be removed before you begin professional whitening. This is done during an in-office professional cleaning appointment with one of our highly trained dental hygienists. If you're interested in whitening and to save your valuable time, inform our team that you'd like to whiten at your next cleaning appointment so time can reserved accordingly.
Absolutely! Our team offers several options to help, depending on how sensitive your teeth are.
Option #1 Rx Grade Toothpaste: At least a couple weeks before beginning to whiten, we recommend that you pick up a tube of prescription grade Clinpro™ 5000 with 1.1% sodium fluoride toothpaste (if you purchase it online, it is not the same strength and does not work the same). Right before bed, brush your teeth with a large pea-sized amount for 2 minutes, spit, and DO NOT RINSE. Leave the remaining toothpaste residue sit on your teeth so the fluoride can penetrate while you sleep to help reduce sensitivity. You can use it in the morning as well, just be sure not to consume anything for 30 minutes after brushing your teeth.
Option #2 UltraEZ™ Gel or Prefilled Tray: If your teeth are on the very sensitive side, we offer UltraEZ™, which is a desensitizing solution that comes in gel or tray form. It can be used before or after whitening. This solution quickly treats sensitivity from teeth whitening, root exposure, toothbrush abrasion, and more. This is great to place onto your teeth directly after in-office whitening treatment.

Option #3 Enamelast™ Fluoride Varnish: At your professional cleanings, be sure to request that your dental hygienist apply this topical desensitizing fluoride varnish on your teeth. Since the product's benefits only last a few months, be sure to request it at each cleaning to help treat tooth hypersensitivity.
Teeth whitening strips are thin, flexible plastic strips with a thin film of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on one side. Whitening strip kits come with 2 types of strips: strips for the upper teeth and strips for the lower teeth. The whitening agent – with reported strengths of 6% to 14% – is applied by placing the strips across your teeth and gently pressing the strips into place to ensure contact with your teeth. Teeth whitening strips are typically worn for 30 minutes twice per day.
Because strips are only used on the front teeth, this treatment can’t whiten your whole smile – only the portion that has come into contact with the strip. Also, strips often move or come off the teeth altogether. This happens more often with the lower strips, due to the lower lip rubbing against the strip. In the long term, whitening strips are more costly than at-home whitening trays.
For these reasons, we find that results from the use of at-home trays far exceed what the strips can do.
We do not offer or recommend whitening strips for our patients.
No. Unlike whitening materials used in professional whitening procedures – such as with an in-office procedure or custom-fit whitening trays and on-the-go whitening trays – these products do not lighten the color within your teeth. Instead, whitening toothpastes or mouthwash affects only surface stains and even then, only mildly lightens the outside of your teeth.
At Marion Smile Center, we use Opalescence teeth whitening products. Over the years, we have researched, reviewed, and tested many professional products. Opalescence, in our opinion, is among the best and safest.
Benefits of the Opalescence teeth whitening products we use include:
- Made in the USA. Opalescence whitening gels and syringes are produced right here in the U.S. at the Ultradent Products facility in Utah. Buying from a made-in-the-USA company means you’ll get fresh formulations – not a product that may have been held up or delayed by a third party. By supporting manufacturers doing business here, you’re helping our nation’s economy and helping provide jobs for hundreds of Americans who take pride in what they do.
- Helps reduce tooth sensitivity. Many over-the-counter whitening products dehydrate your teeth, which can result in uncomfortable sensitivity for patients. Opalescence professional tooth whitening gel is made with a high water content to protect against dehydration that can occur during whitening. The high water content in Opalescence whitening gel is combined with potassium nitrate and fluoride to help reduce the likelihood of residual sensitivity for patients.
- Gluten-free, certified kosher and sweetened with xylitol. These whitening products are gluten-free and kosher-certified to fit in with the varied lifestyles and beliefs of patients. Opalescence professional whitening gel is also sweetened with xylitol, a noncariogenic sugar substitute, for better oral health.
